What are the benefits of community solar?

The benefits of community solar occur on many levels, from the individual household to the global community. The primary benefits include monthly savings on utility bills and reduced CO2 emissions from the advancement of renewable energy.

  • Accessibility- Community solar removes all barriers to participating in renewable energy, making it accessible to all. With community solar, there is no cost to participate, and it is easy to drop out of the program if you change your mind – no installation, upfront costs, hidden fees, or cancellation fees.
  • Savings- Community solar customers receive 10% savings off of community solar credits each month. For low-to-moderate income households, these savings can be even larger.
  • Increased Tax Revenue- The local municipality, schools, and other public institutions also have the added benefit of taxes from the solar project, or a program called Payment in Lieu of Taxes (PILOT), in addition to savings on electricity
  • Power Grid Resilience- With more distributed renewable energy power plants throughout the grid, and with the addition of batteries, we are better able to prevent widespread power outages from infrastructure failures, weather events, or other
catastrophic events. A decentralized power grid with smart power management in place is more resilient and has positive impacts on the businesses and people in the region.
  • Development of Local Renewable Energy- Renewable energy is key to halting climate change and preventing the global impacts of increasing temperatures. Even a local solar farm plays a significant role in protecting life on this planet as we know it.
